Fillings are an essential treatment for maintaining your oral health. If you have cavities, you need a filling of some sort to stop the acceleration of decay that can occur when food and bacteria get trapped in your cavities, allowing the bacteria to grow in shelter as they burrow deeper into your teeth. But traditional metal fillings, while functional, have several problems. They contain mercury, which evaporates from the filling and is inhaled by you, or permeates through your tooth into your bloodstream. It’s never been confirmed that this is actually harmful, but many people are concerned. Not only that, but metal fillings turn black with age, making them as bad for your appearance as the cavity they fill.
We offer two different tooth-colored filling options: composite resin or porcelain inlays or onlays. To learn which might be right for you, please call (619) 299-5925 or email Strober Dental in San Diego today for an appointment.
Tooth Colored Fillings Options
San Diego dentist, Dr. Rod Strober recommends replacing cracked or dark silver/amalgam restorations with white fillings made of composite resin or porcelain inlays and onlays. Not only do white fillings look more attractive, but they do not contain mercury, so they are totally safe. If you need a filling, Dr. Strober will conservatively remove dental decay from your teeth, and then place shaded composite resin into the cavities. A curing light hardens the material, and we’ll check your bite to make sure the filling fits comfortably.
Porcelain inlays and onlays follow a similar process as far as the removal of decay, but then the shape of your teeth and the area where decay was removed are captured with a 3D imaging system. This information is then sent to our CEREC machine, which will create a perfectly custom ceramic white filling while you wait.
