One of the best benefits of dental implant is that they can look very attractive and natural. They look so natural that many people can’t tell the difference between a dental implant and a natural tooth, if it’s done properly. But it isn’t always done properly, and if you want to make sure you get attractive dental implants, you can’t leave all the work to an implant dentist–you have to do some yourself.
Here’s what you have to do.
For Attractive Dental Implants, Choose a Specialist
As dental implants have grown in popularity, general dentists have started offering them, even though they may have little training in the technique. The procedure is complicated, and if done improperly, the result can be a poor aesthetic result, or even serious complications.
Evaluate “Before and After”s Carefully
Before and after images are your best evidence for whether a dentist or dentists are capable of getting quality results, but you have to scrutinize them carefully. Probably the most important, and most challenging, part of getting an attractive dental implant is the way the gums grow up and around the implant, which is something many before and after images just don’t show very well.
If you can’t see the gums, ask for different images that show the area. A dentist who thoroughly documents their cases–and anyone you can trust should–will have one.
If the “after” images are six months or less from the procedure, ask for later ones, at least a year on. Not all dentists will have these, but, if they don’t, ask to talk to a dental implant patient who has had their implants for over a year.
Commit to the Procedure
Dental implants are just like natural teeth in that they need proper care and maintenance if they’re to look good and last long. If you want good dental implant results, you need to be prepared to do care for them. This means following all your dentist’s instructions after the procedure, and being committed to a lifetime of good oral hygiene, including regular dental check-ups.
If you use tobacco or are a heavy drinker, you may have to change your habits to foster a healthy implant.
If you don’t commit to basic care and maintenance, and won’t give up habits that can harm your implants, you may not get the results you want.
Expand Your Approach
The attractiveness of your dental implant is limited by the attractiveness of the teeth around it. An attractive dental implant will stand out in a row of less attractive teeth, so if you’re really looking to get an attractive dental implant, you should consider modifying your other teeth as well. At a minimum, you should consider teeth whitening so your dental implant can be matched to your teeth at their whitest.
