Is Loyalty Keeping You with an Outdated Dentist?

Loyalty to Bad DentistLoyalty is a positive quality. We should be loyal to our friends, our family, and our country. (Not to mention being true to your school!) But sometimes unquestioning loyalty can be bad for us, especially when it comes to a doctor or a dentist.

Stylist Carol Brailey, writing for Huffington Post, recounts the story of how when she was a child her family was very loyal to their one dentist until he retired. Then they found a new dentist who was not only more up-to-date, he provided better service. How do you know when loyalty to your dentist is problematic? Here are a few signs to look for.

Dentist Offers Same Old Services

Dentistry is an exciting profession that is constantly evolving. However, not all dentists keep pace with the rapid progression of the trade, and it shows when a dentist continues to offer just the same procedures they always have: metal amalgam fillings, metal or porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns, and wire braces. Dentistry has developed new alternatives to these with tooth-colored fillings, all-ceramic dental crowns, and Invisalign. If your dentist isn’t moving on, maybe it’s time for you to do the moving.

Dentist Doesn’t Add New Credentials

All dentists are required to take a certain amount of continuing education that is supposed to help them keep up-to-date on the latest developments in the field. However, dentists that are just doing the minimum aren’t really keeping up, they’re falling behind. A dentist that is really trying to stay at the leading edge of dentistry is pursuing new educational opportunities, which typically come with new certifications. Common ones to look for are cosmetic dentistry, TMJ treatment, sleep apnea treatment, and sedation dentistry, but there are many more. What’s important is not necessarily what they’re learning, but that they are learning.

Dentist Doesn’t Update Equipment

Remember in Little Shop of Horrors where Steve Martin’s dentist character Orin Scrivello, DDS, pulls out the old, rusty drill, and praises it: “It’s an antique. They don’t make ’em like this any more. Sturdy. Heavy. Dull!” Needless to say, you don’t want to get that feeling at your dentist’s office. You want to know that your dentist is constantly keeping the equipment up to date. This doesn’t necessarily mean the latest model of everything, but it does mean you shouldn’t see any antiques being used.

Dentist Doesn’t Update Decor

This may seem like a minor thing, but the decoration of a dentist’s office actually matters. Not just because looking at something pleasing actually makes you more comfortable and reduces discomfort, but also because you want your cosmetic dentist to have an updated sense of style. Although it doesn’t change as much as hair does, smiles do follow fashion. And you want to make sure you’re not getting outdated results when you have a smile makeover.

You’re Not Getting Quality Care

This is the most important factor to consider. If you are really happy with the care you’re getting, the items above don’t really matter. But the chances are, if you’re going to an outdated dentist, you’re probably not getting the level of care you deserve, just a level of care you’ve been prepared to settle for.

It’s time to stop settling for outdated dental care, and time to start getting the dental care you deserve. If you are looking for an up-to-date cosmetic dentist in San Diego, please call(619) 299-5925 for an appointment at Strober Dental today.
